What's for Fun?

I don't believe in boredom. We visit the library at least twice a month. Our kids are required to read everyday. My first grader loves Junie B. Jones. My five year old son found a book full of classic cars. He just had to check it out. My husband is into sci-fi.
I gravitate toward poetry and home decorating. Just ask our librarian.

We spend a lot of time on arts and crafts. Both children enjoy painting crafts and on canvas. I've discovered my lost artist. I've painted on and off for the last twelve years. Lately, I've really been expressing myself through abstract art. Blue seems to be my favorite color these days and you can do a lot with it. Zoey will be taking a painting class in June. Paul would love to take drum lessons, but we haven't been able to find a teacher. He's also thinking about taking tap. He will at least be getting a drum set soon.

My kids love to make things! We live in a free spirited environment. I tell my kids our household is run by a democracy. My husband jokingly disagrees. At least I think he's kidding.

Zoey draws and colors. Paul enjoys pasting. They both get into making their own computer graphics. My daughter made a giant flower from tissue paper and pipe cleaners. She made a blue sun out of construction paper to hang above her bed. Paul created a green moon. He is a Van Goghe fan already. Should I be worried? LOL He just had to have a reprint of Starry Night for his room.

We only have one movie theatre within thirty minutes. We recently saw The Bridge to Teribitha. Good family flick. Softly sad. Truly Imagitive. For Valentine's Day we took the kids with us to see Because I Said So. This one was not appropriate for the little ones.I had to keep reminding them throughout the show not to repeat certain words or phrases.

Our movie collection includes sci fi, children's and chick flicks. Nanny Mcphee was my Christmas present to the family. When all else fails tell your kids you're going to call Nanny Mphee. This is a cute movie about creative children [to say the least.} Awesome movie. It has a Mary Popins flare. Haunted Mansion is another must see if you haven't already. I'm not going to give the story line away this time.

The kids like to have games night with their father. Games teach important learning skills. Mom's part in games night involves cooking up some neat treats.

There is always something fun and interesting to do at our house.

Idea # 5 Shop Late

My friend called me around eleven o'clock last night. She wanted me to accompany her to Wal-Mart. At this hour we had the store pretty much to ourselves wit the exception of the stockers[not stalkers}. We live in a small town. Out here in a somewhat royal area Wal-Mart is the place people end up when they can't think of anywhere else to go. We joke about that once in awhile. On the weekends you'll find more people out after hours. Sometimes the folks you encounter after ten at Wal-Mart are interesting. OVer the weekend my family noticed some unusually dressed teenagers. Unusually dressed is saying a lot when speaking of teens. They were wearing renaissance costumes. Guess it's getting to be that time of year. Homemade soap anyone?

Idea # 4 Rock Collecting

Bring a little nature home with you. Our home-made rock garden includes genuine Kentucky coal. My husband had never seen so much black diamond before. My aunt didn't mind giving up as much as he'd haul off.

What's in a rock garden? Imagination. You can mix rocks and flowers or just rocks.

When we're on our nature walks our kids pick up all sorts of rocks. One day I'll probably find a creepy crawly in one of their pockets. No, that's my pockets. LOL

Idea # 3

Do you keep a journal? You can keep with the traditional diary or you may choose to create a picture post card type collage. Dig out some old magazines. Don't run with scissors! Allow your inner child to do some pasting. Pick pictures and excerpts from articles you identify with. Crayons and markers can come in handy too. Draw flowers, rainbows, kittens or bunnies. When you're happy cover the book in smilies. When your sad fill a page or two with frowning faces. Express yourself!

What Am I Doing?

The end of the year brought many true blessings into my life. My family moved to Keene,Texas from Glenn Heights. We're much happier here though we've had to adjust to being an hour away from everyone and everything we'd gotten to know so well. The long winter made us homesick. You can't get out much when it's cold. Yes, I realize we live in Texas wiseguy. Can you believe it snowed in April? The kids watched through the
windows in the sun room [snowroom}. Yes, I think I'm funny. My husband isn't sure about that one. That's why I'm not a comedian. Ha! Laugh it off!!

So, what is the country housewife up to lately? You can check out my essays at http://www.associatedcontent.com Just spell my name right even though I keep spelling it wrong. Nancy Austin. Maybe you want to write for them.

You can get my first published book of poetry from http://www.publishamerica.com

Idea # 2

Raw creativity has very little do with skill. Creativity is a gift in itself. We're not all going to be Rembrants. Some of us are more inspired by Van Goghe or Picasso.

We're not all going to be prodigies anymore than we're all likely to graduate high school at the age of sixteen. You may decide to begin your first novel at the age of forty. Ever notice how at some point many little girls fantasize about being a bellerina? The rode to heaven is paved with childlike qualities. Don't be afraid to dream. Just remember that serious ballerinas wear their special little shoes out. Their toes bleed. They hunger for goof off time. Famous horror writers aren't ashamed to put their own nightmares down on paper. A good poet is an honest one. The most accomplished vocalists are also avid story tellers. World class dancers speak volumes through body language. Drummers express themselves through the beat of their hearts. So, find out who you are and expect to work on your own character as much as the main character in your novel. Remember, God made you. Therefore he knows more about you than anyone.

Idea #One

Take a walk in the country. Smell the pine. Pick wildflowers. Don't pick them all. Choose one flower growing in a bundle from one stem. In other words, leave the root in tact. Look around. We're having to go the distance just to locate undisturbed, natural habitat.
Allow the countryside to inspire your spirit.

In Genesis God created the heavens and the earth. He created humanity in his image. To pollute the planet is to deface God's creation. It's all too common to see trash alongside the rode even in the country.

The other day, my family stopped the ice cream truck. After eating our treats we ask a woman who was also waiting for the ice cream truck if we could borrow her trash can. She was glad to share. We need to all work together in keeping God's land clean.

While out playing in the back yard with the kids and pets pick up any trash you may find laying around. Trash happens even to the best of us, but it's our job to pick it up.

Beware of fly away litter. Check around your trash can for bottles, papers and cans that may have hit the ground instid of hitting bottom. Watch out for other people's trash winding up in your yard or left overs trailing down the street.

Your front porch says a lot about you. So, keep an eye on it. Also, don't let your porch become an easy out or dumping ground for the items you no longer want inside.

Keep it clean!

We've all heard of noise pollution. What about visual pollution? I'm not speaking of bad art. If you have a tent, a broken down car, a fridge and two sheds in your yard what do your neighbors think when they have to look at your mess everyday? Does your neighbors' yard resemble a landfield? I'm not handing out trophies for the redkneck yard of the year. Wrong website.
